Koblenz – Bannes

April 13

Morning was sunny and slightly cool. The temperature quickly began to rise. After breakfast, we got ready to set off. We decided to drive along the Mosel. It was a splendid river valley bordered by vineyards and successive villages. Large tourist boats cruised up and down the river carrying tourists. We stuck to the road.

We chose routes from the navigator that avoided toll highways. Following the navigation, we found ourselves on small roads that passed through several dozen small villages. The spaces between villages were picturesque fields. Blooming fields of rapeseed or mustard in yellow, interspersed with freshly plowed dark soil areas and various shades of green crops. Even those with less discerning eyes could admire the brilliance of colors. As we passed through the villages, we saw old and even older churches. We didn’t stop to examine them more closely.

During our drive through Luxembourg, we stopped to refuel the car and ourselves. We heard people speaking Luxembourgish. Some hundred thousand locals speak that language.

As the day leaned towards evening, we began to look for a place to stay overnight. We both longed for a peaceful rural environment. After a few detours, we found an excellent camping site (Camping de Hautoreille). It wasn’t expensive (15 €) and the hosts were really nice. A glass of Rhone wine in the restaurant cost 3.30€! I dare to recommend this place to any traveler. They also had a Finnish flag at the gate. That delighted us greatly!

After dinner, we sat down with a glass of wine with a local girl (Lini) who was camping nearby. We talked about our travels and projects in Tanzania and Finland. She’s thinking of cycling to Finland. We welcomed her. I gave her my business card in case she needs a contact person in Finland.

Daytime temperatures rising… Night temperatures ideal for us!
